What We Do
All Write-London projects aim to assist in helping people be heard.
Projects are based around a series of workshops delivered in the local community. The workshops provide participant groups of all ages with some tools to explore their creativity.
Participants are supported and encouraged to share their work; however, the choice is always theirs. Most projects are based around the creation of a book, which is published at its conclusion, showcasing peoples’ creative vision.
Where appropriate, projects are often celebrated with a showcase event of the work created by those who created it.
Since 2014 Write-London has collaborated with almost 3000 participants and 45 artists on various projects, both of our own creation and in partnership. Work created during sessions has been exhibited globally to an audience exceeding 118,000 people. The audience which has seen the work in print, online or broadcast as of January 2024 stands at over 10 million.
Work created during Write-London sessions have been published, broadcast or otherwise exhibited by various media outlets including:
Age UK, BBC 2, BBC 3, BBC Radio 4, Camden New Journal, MIND, Outsider Art, Pavement, Surrey Comet, Tate Modern, The Big Issue and The Mirror.
Write-London works with participants of all age groups with various needs of complexity
Who We Are
Write-London was created after Tom Mallender graduated Roehampton University in 2010 with a degree in Creative Writing and Psychology. After a few years working as a freelance writer on a number of projects during which time Tom developed the practise and form that became documentary poetry, he took part in a poetry event called the Midnight Run organised by Spread the Word. At this event he met Francesca Beard and in conversation with her was invited to deliver a workshop at Apple and Snakes on documentary poetry. From there, with the support of Spread the Word and Creative Future, Tom founded Write-London.
Naino Masindet first joined Write-London in 2018 as a participant during the trialling phase of Write-London Unheard Voices. Having partaken in all projects since then as an artist, Naino joined the staff of Write-London in 2022 as a co-editor and became co-director in 2023.
Write-London has always strived to deliver its work with the mindset of being the kind of environment and experience Tom wishes he had, had access to when a service user himself.
